Edcon – Proud Principal Sponsor of Casual Day

The National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in SA (NCPPDSA) is proud to have Edcon as principal sponsor of Casual Day from 2013.

Edcon has participated in Casual Day for some years and made a contribution to the sponsorship budget in 2012. This year Edcon has committed to a three-year contract as principal sponsor, with the aim of rising R6 million in sticker sales at all Edcon stores and overall, to contribute R11 million towards the project over the period. Casual Day has raised over R170 million for organisations of persons with disabilities since its inception 18 years ago. The 2013 project broke all previous records, raising R23.5 million.

Corporate social investment is an integral part of Edcon’s transformation strategy and is committed to making a difference to the lives of individuals, families and society at large. Edcon’s corporate social investment activities are primarily through support for education, and their support for Casual Day allows them to add persons with disabilities to their portfolio.edcon_pics

Dr Urin Ferndale, chief operating officer and executive director at Edcon explains, “Over the past seven years, Edcon has been a supporter of the annual Casual Day campaign and this entailed being, essentially a reseller of the Casual Day stickers. In 2013 Edcon committed to fund the project for another three years where it will continue to act as a caring corporate citizen in an effort to make a meaningful difference to the disability community.”

Edcon’s involvement comes by way of the company’s mission to share wealth for positive change in the quality of life of people in areas which it trades. Edcon believes it has a responsibility towards the development and upliftment of its communities, while pursuing its business objectives.

“We are very excited to be more involved with this project, which is vital to the survival of many of South Africa’s organisations providing services for persons with disabilities. Casual Day aligns strongly with Edcon’s broader corporate social investment strategy and gives us the opportunity to contribute to the lives of a very vulnerable sector of the community,” says Ms Mercia Maserumule, Edcon Group CSI Manager.

The proceeds of Casual Day are used to fund a range of projects and programmes for persons with disabilities. The funds are raised as a result of each R10 donation for a Casual Day sticker, which is distributed via the infrastructure of the project’s various sponsors and financial partners and a wide network of participating organisations rendering services in the field of disability.

“As we move into the 2014 campaign, we welcome Edcon on board as our principal sponsor,” says NCPPDSA Chairman, Mr Brian Sweetlove. “Our sponsors are the lifeblood of Casual Day and without them, we would not be able to do the work we do. Casual Day is approaching two decades of service to the community of persons with disabilities and a new sponsor gives us the chance to refresh our approach,” says Sweetlove.

Says Therina Wentzel, National Director of NCPPDSA, “Edcon is a perfect fit for Casual Day as the project encourages the people of South Africa to go to work dressed differently on the first Friday in September every year. It is a fun project and allows everyone, in every corner of the country to make a contribution. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Edcon and the staff of all Edcon stores, who made Casual Day such a runaway success last year and we look forward to working with them again this year.”

Casual Day takes place on 5 September 2013, and stickers can be obtained for a R10 donation at all Edcon stores, which include the following brands: Edgars, Edgars ACTIVE, Red Square, Boardmans, CNA, Jet, JetMart and LEGIT.
